Can Teeth Whitening Cause Damage?

Our professional teeth whitening options don’t damage your tooth enamel. Whitening your teeth under our supervision is safe and effective, making it a popular cosmetic option.

Here’s what can cause your teeth to become stained or discolored:

  • Food and drink — Certain foods and beverages, such as red wine, soda, soy sauce, and certain fruits can stain your teeth.
  • Tobacco — If you smoke or use smokeless tobacco, your teeth can turn yellow or brown.
  • Poor hygiene — Infrequent brushing and flossing can leave plaque and tartar buildup and cause tooth discoloration.
  • Medications — Certain medications, such as antihistamines, can stain your teeth.
  • Aging — As you get older, your tooth enamel wears down. This exposes the yellow dentin underneath.

Treatment Options for Your Smile

Our dental office offers two types of whitening treatments to fit your busy schedule:

  • In-office teeth whitening — We can get your smile ready for a wedding, vacation, or class reunion in a little over an hour.
  • Take-home whitening kits — If you’d prefer to whiten your teeth when it’s convenient for you, we offer take-home whitening kits. Our prescription whitening gel and custom whitening trays can give you the desired results, and you can use the leftover gel for touch-ups when you need to. You’ll wear your whitening trays for 15 to 90 minutes daily for about two weeks.
